A myriad of Jewels as far as the eye can see is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Black Eagle. Located on Bridge Road owner and creator Veneta Grivas is a true curator of all things beautiful. From original 1920’s art deco to quirky colorful Perspex pieces from Melbourne designer Erst Wilder; there is something for everyone and I challenge someone to walk in and not find a piece they like (go on, I dare you!) Veneta’s passion and enthusiasm for her collections are infectious as you will always gain a little fact or quirky detail about your purchase (an added bonus in my opinion). So there you have it, the eagle has landed; now it’s time to swoop in…

It’s the 60’s and the Mod subculture has swept the nation with poster girls Edie Sedgwick and Twiggy at the forefront of fashion and style and bands like the Who rocking out with groovy threads to boot. Fast forward fifty years and it seems like Mod is back in a big way!! Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors and Prada have set the tone for this season and have encapsulated the subculture perfectly. Crowds were wowed in Paris when Mr. Jacobs’s checker-board shifts came down the escalator runways for the Louis Vuitton show and were in awe of Prada’s beautiful monochrome daisy coats. Marc Jacobs also proclaimed that he was inspired by Andy Warhol’s muse (Edie Sedgwick) for his personal collection which had the models all sporting her famous pixie like ‘do’.  So there you have it; a reincarnation of a fabulous time in fashion and music has come forth and I for one hope it’s here to stay!!

When people heard I was working back of house at fashion week the questions started pouring in… Will you be dressing the models? Will you meet any designers? Do you get to watch the shows? My answer Yes, Yes & YES!!! From the moment I walked through the doors I was in fashion heaven, all the chaos around me seemed to slow down and it was just me and these amazing pieces… Mary Katrantzou, Alice McCall, Ksubi, Life With Bird, Ginger and Smart, Tigerlily, Michael Lo Sordo, Kirrily Johnston, Alannah Hill, Aurelio Costarella the list goes on! I instantly started putting pieces together in my mind to suit clients, shoots and the other myriad of projects I have… Who am I kidding I wanted them all for me! After the initial excitement it was time to get to work; with two dress rehearsals and an endless amount of prepping we were minutes away from our first show! I had the honour of dressing Cassi van den Dungen who was so sweet and gracious amongst the frantic nature around us, she rocked all her looks (of course) and walked that runway like the pro she is. I also had the pleasure of dressing Christina Carey who was such a trooper despite her ankle injury! The shows as a whole were incredible, the energy was palpable and the clothes were on another level. All in all, a huge success and an amazing week of fun and fashion. Now how many sleeps until spring fashion week…

A buzz in the audience as they wait in anticipation to see the work of a creative genius. The lights go up the music begins and as the first model places her foot on the runway there is a feeling of awe and excitement. The lady behind this spectacular collection is the one and only Mary Katrantzou. From her debut in 2009 she has been a tour de force in the fashion world. With her use of bold prints and textures Katrantzou has created pieces which are avant-garde yet feminine and totally wearable (a rare talent). I was honored to be in the presence of a true artist and it was a brilliant opening to the amazing event that is L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival. The Pièce de résistance the crazy beautiful typewriter dress of course!!
